The Dying Tree was inspired by tales of the dying
and wounded at the battles of Antietam & Gettysburg
The Dying Tree
Lay me under
The tree with no shade
who’s leaves have all fallen
like so many menStrong are the roots
that hold us in grace
and moist is the earth with the life
of the dying and maimedAnd those who have fallen
have fallen this day
underneath the dying tree
there is no shameCame tumbling forward
twice the speed of sound
on the second volley
I dropped to the ground
now life flows freely
and the grass is burnt red
and the soil is sick with the lies
of sinful menAnd those who have fallen
have fallen this day
the dying tree will hold us
will hold us safeAnd those who have fallen
have fallen this day
the dying tree will hold us
will hold us safewritten by Matthew Sully © Sullystone Music
